WARNING - KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE. Late January through early March is mating season for Coyotes and being related to dogs they may regard your dog as a mate or a rival or dinner! Do not let your dogs out alone and do not allow your outdoor cats to roam. Coyote breeding typically peaks in late February and early March, the gestation period averages 58 to 63 days. Male Coyotes can become more aggressive during this time of year, the long and short of it all is that Coyotes always pose a risk to your dog and other small pets. Notes: Benson is an exuberant outgoing three year old boy who loves people and other dogs too. He enjoys going for walks and does well on leash but he does pull some. He is trying to be house trained but needs more work. He weighs about 47 pounds, which is a good weight for him. He is a gentle soul and should do fine with children. Benson needs a big fenced yard where he can run off some of his energy safely. He is looking for a forever family who want to give him lots of attention and belly rubs when he is in the house and take him for walks so he can explore and sniff the smells.

The adoption fee is $45 which includes a rabies vaccination.
Tappahannock Essex County Animal Shelter (TECAS) does not do same day adoptions. You must fill in an Adoption Application Form. Your application will be reviewed and we will telephone the applicant, usually within 72 hours, to let you know that your application has been approved or denied.
Click here for the Adoption Application Form- Each pet is required to be vaccinated for rabies within seven days of adoption, if it is four months of age or older. Rabies vaccination is required for each pet, upon turning four months of age.
- Every new owner of a pet adopted from Essex County Animal Shelter shall have the pet sterilized within thirty days of the pet turning six months of age, or within thirty days if the pet is over six months of age.
- Out of state adoptions must be spayed or neutered before leaving Virginia.
- Return of the proper paperwork (sterilization and rabies certificates) to is required within seven days of sterilization.
- State law requires that all dogs and cats be vaccinated for rabies.
